The Heat Sink is a portal mod.

It can be used to speed up the cooldown timer that activates when hacking a portal, so that you don't have to wait the standard 5 minute cooldown to hack the portal again.

They also have the ability to "reset" the portal burn-out timer if added to a portal, allowing another set of hacks for the agent who deployed it. This feature was added on March 21st, 2014.

XM Costs

Deploying a Heat Sink costs XM depending on the rarity of the item:

Heat Sink Rarity XM Cost
Common 400 XM
Rare 800 XM
Very Rare 1000 XM

Cooldown Time

The decrease in cooldown time when using just one Heat Sink goes as follows:

Deploying one CommonHeat Sink decreases the cooldown time by 20%.
Deploying one RareHeat Sink decreases the cooldown time by 50%.
Deploying one Very RareHeat Sink decreases the cooldown time by 70%.

However, when combining Heat Sinks, the decrease per Heat Sink will be smaller to encourage using different mods on a portal. Below is a table showing cooldown time decreasing when deploying Heat Sinks of a single rarity.

Rarity Amount Cooldown Time
- - 300 s
Common 1 240 s
Common 2 216 s
Common 3 194.4 s
Common 4 174.96 s
Rare 1 150 s
Rare 2 112.5 s
Rare 3 84.39 s
Rare 4 63.3 s
Very Rare 1 90 s
Very Rare 2 58.5 s
Very Rare 3 38 s
Very Rare 4 24.72 s

When combining various rarities, the cooldown time decrease can be calculated using the following formula:

300 - (1-(1-h)(1-a/2)(1-b/2)(1-c/2))*300

h = Most rare Heat Sink decrease percentage
a = Second Heat Sink decrease percentage
b = Third Heat Sink decrease percentage
c = Fourth Heat Sink decrease percentage

Example: an agent deploys 1 Very RareHeat Sink, 2 RareHeat Sinks and 1 CommonHeat Sink.

300 - (1-(1-0.7)(1-0.5/2)(1-0.5/2)(1-0.2/2))*300 = 45.56 seconds

Reset Burn Out Timer

Typically you only get 4 hacks on a portal before burning it out. Multihacks of course add onto the burnout counter, allowing any Agent to hack beyond it’s burnout limit. Heat Sinks (regardless of rarity) now reset the burnout period to 0 for the Agent that installed the mod. This reset is only a one time reset of the burnout counter for the Agent that installed the mod. Example 1: I’ve hacked a portal 4 times and burned it out. Adding a Heat Sink resets that burnout counter to 0, allowing me to hack 4 more times, with a total of 8 hacks. Other Agents still only get their original 4 hacks with no burnout reset. Example 2: I’ve installed a CommonMulti Hack and hacked a portal 8 times before burning out the portal. Adding a Heat Sink will reset that counter to 0, allowing me to hack 8 more times.

Usage

The Heat Sink has 3 uses:

Deploy

Deploy the item onto a portal.

Drop

Drop the item for others to retrieve.

Recycle

Recycling a CommonHeat Sink will yield 40 XM.
Recycling a RareHeat Sink will yield 80 XM.
Recycling a Very RareHeat Sink will yield 100 XM.
