Niantic Wayfarer logo
Niantic Wayfarer, previously known as Operation Portal Recon, (wayfarer.nianticlabs.com) is a web application from Niantic Labs that provides crowdsourced verification of new Wayspot submissions and Wayspot edits. Agents of L10full and higher can be accessed to the website for nomination managing, while agents who pass a quiz to demonstrate their knowledge of the candidate Wayspot criteria can also review Wayspot nominations and edits. Through Wayfarer, agents can indicate whether a candidate Wayspot is suitable to be included in the portal network. This allows Niantic Labs to leverage the knowledge of local agents.

The Recon medal is awarded to agents that participate on Wayfarer. The performance of agents participating on Wayfarer is rated on a scale of "Poor", "Good" and "Great". As long as the agent's rating is "Good" or "Great", the number of agreements counts towards the medal (that is, when the agent's vote matches the ultimate fate of the submission).
Wayspots created through Wayfarer may also appear as PokeStops or Gyms in Pokemon GO[1], and Inns, Greenhouses, or Fortresses in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
History
Operation Portal Recon (OPR) opened to the public on 25 September 2017.[2] Before that, rating new portal submissions was done by Niantic staff. To limit the workload, submissions were disallowed in many parts of the world.[3]
On 5 June 2018, portal edits (name, description and location changes) can also be rated on OPR.
On 10 October 2019, OPR is revamped and renamed Niantic Wayfarer. The nomination management feature is also added.
